Moisture Matters: Winter Skincare Tips to Combat Dryness

When the temperature drops, it takes the moisture in your skin with it. But that doesn’t mean you have to put up with dry skin all season long. Keep your glow intact with these tips!

Cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating can wreak havoc on skin in the winter, leaving it parched, flaky, and irritated. But don’t worry; with a few easy tweaks to your skincare routine, you can help keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and glowing all season long.

1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

A quality moisturizer is the cornerstone of winter skincare. Switch to a richer, cream-based moisturizer that will provide a deeper level of hydration. In particular, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides that will do a better job of helping your skin retain moisture. Apply it immediately after showering or washing your face to lock the moisture in more effectively.

2. Stay Hydrated

Summer heat drives us to drink water, while in the winter we sometimes forget. However, drinking enough water is still important in the winter as well, especially for maintaining good skin health. Warm teas are a great way to stay hydrated and keep the cold at bay. You can also reach for hydrating fruits like mandarin oranges.

3. Use a Gentle Exfoliator

Exfoliation is key to removing dead skin cells and keeping your skin healthier, but overdoing it can also irritate already dry skin. Steer clear of harsh scrubs or exfoliants with large, gritty particles, and look for options with mild ingredients like lactic acid or oatmeal instead. Use your gentle exfoliant once or twice a week.

4. Don’t Skip Sunscreen

The sun’s UV rays can still damage your skin when it’s cold out. In fact, they can bounce off snowy surfaces and give you a sunburn even in winter! To help protect your skin, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even on overcast days. Apply the sunscreen to exposed areas like your face, neck, and hands.

5. Set Up a Humidifier

Indoor heating sucks the moisture out of the air in your home during the winter, which is why investing in a humidifier will add that much-needed humidity back into your living spaces. You can also keep one in your bedroom to maintain skin hydration while you sleep. Best of all, there are many reasonably priced portable humidifiers available in stores and online.

6. Limit Your Long, Hot Showers

There’s nothing better than a long, hot shower on a cold winter day, but those steamy showers can also be a major culprit behind your dry skin. The hot water strips skin of its natural oils, leaving it even drier. To combat this, try to keep your showers shorter or, if you are willing, turn the temperature down a notch. Your skin will thank you.

7. Adjust Your Diet

Diet plays a big role in the health of your skin, including its ability to lock in moisture. Try to eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, to help keep your skin supple. Vitamins A, C, and E, found in leafy greens, citrus fruits, and almonds, are also essential for skin repair and hydration.

Winter doesn’t have to mean months of dry and uncomfortable skin. By prioritizing hydration, you can enjoy the season’s beauty without sacrificing your skin’s health.
